| Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQs ) |
| Q. Why do Kashmiris celebrate three New Years and two birthdays? |
Ans. Kashmiris follow three different calendars :The saptarishi samvat, currently running into the 5078 th year. The new Year as per this calendar starts on the first day of the Navratras viz. on Navreh
The Vikrami samwat runs now into its 2058th year. The New Year according to this calendar falls on Baisakhi.
The Isvi samwat according to the Gregorian calendar runs into its 2002th year. The new year in this calendar falls on 1st January.
Conventionally, Kashmiris follow the Vikrami for birthdays and the dates change. For official purposes the Isvi samwat is in use.
Thus Kashmiris generally have two birthdays. On their Kashmiri birthday they have puja and tehar( yellow rice). On their English birthdays they cut a birthday cake and sing ‘happy birthday to you |
