Kumkum Dhar is one of the most famous Kathak dancers of the country.
She learnt this dance form at the feet of the renowned guru Late Lachhu Maharaj of the Lucknow Gharana. She excels in the combined portrayal of dance, music and abhinaya. She acted as the heroine of the dance dramas produced by Lachhu Maharaj. After his demise, she became the Director of the presentation ‘ Pushp Vaatika’ made by the Kathak Kendra of the UP Sangeet Natak Akademi. Some of the important dramas where she had a premier role are: Chandravali, Gautam Buddha, Inder Sabha, Geet Govinda, Udhav Mohe Braj Bisrat Naahin, etc.
Kumkum is the dance director for Darpan. Some of her famous plays have been: Hayavadan, Abu Hassan, Guphayen, Yahoodi ki Ladki, Harish Chander ki Ladai and so on.
She is a National Fellow of the Government of India, gold medallist from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti and Akademi awardee of the UP Sangeet Natak Akademi.
