The most eminent character actor in today’s filmdom, Anupam Kher, is a Kashmiri Pandit who was born in Himachal Pradesh. He is one of the galaxy of big stars that have emerged from the National School of Drama.
Starting his film career with a bang in Saraansh with a highly sensitive portrayal of an old man who loses his young son, Anupam never looked back and went on to act in over 250 films. These have been mostly in the genre of commercial cinema. Anupam has played everything___ villain, comedian, character actor. You name it and he has done it.
He is still fond of the stage and takes time off from his busy schedule to devote himself to the theatre. Recently, he acted in Salgirah. He considers the stage to be live entertainment.
He has received numerous awards, but he specially treasures the Sharda Samman and the pheran given to him by the Kashmiri Pandit Maha Sammelan. He is proud of his Kashmiri identity.
